And This Is Why We Need Tougher Laws
Against Men Who Abuse Women

Todd Matson

Two old hens
perched on crates
in the ugly hen house,
patches of feathers missing
from their backs, the gate to the
hen house open, always wide open.

Chickens roaming free in the distance
where the grass is greener; young,
fully grown chickens, healthy,
full of feathers, thirty-some
strong, roaming free.

“Why won’t
the old hens join
the chickens in the
distance where the grass
is greener?” you may ask.
“The gate is wide open! The
hens are free to go!” you may say.

“Because the rooster,” my friend,
“Because the rooster attacks
the old hens, plucks the
feathers from their
backs when they
move toward
the gate.”
