The Cat and the Raccoon

Rani Jayakumar

The Cat and the Raccoon were sitting in the garage one day. The Cat was reading to the Raccoon.
“There’s a nightmare in my closet,” said the Cat.
“I don’t like scary stories during the day,” said the Raccoon. “Let’s read that at night, when we can see.”
“Okay,” said the Cat. “How’s this? ‘Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Red Riding Hood.’”
“Oh, yes,” said the Raccoon, curling his striped tail. “That’s a good one.”
They settled in, the Cat sitting on the edge of the table and the Raccoon curled up in the big black leather chair, as the Cat read the story.
“Shhh!” said the Raccoon suddenly. “Listen! Did you hear that?”
    “What?” asked the Cat, alarmed.
“Quiet! I think they’re home!” said the Raccoon, leaping out of the chair and peeking out of the garage.
“Oh dear,” said the Cat, dropping the book, upsetting a mug of pens, and scrambling out of the garage and onto the fence with a “Meow!”
“Bye! See you tonight!” said the Raccoon, slinking away over the roof. Behind him, he saw the little boy come into the garage and return with the fairy tale book he had left behind. He took the book inside.
Tonight, the Cat and the Raccoon would have to read something else.
