These Plants Are Lucky to Have a Job

Emmie Christie

Our plants clock in on Monday and we only water them
If they turn green.
We whisper harassment to vulnerable succulents
Just starting out in the house, interning to have a bit of sun,
And then tell them not to tell HR.
We push out the grandfather aloe with no pension
Just before he retires, it’s called business sense.
We fire the pregnant blooming flowers
So we don’t have to pay for her seeds. We don’t have the space!
We penalize the perennials for their loyalty
Because they’ll never leave anyway, why would we raise them
To a windowsill with light?
Why would we give any of them better fertilizer benefits
When they seem happy enough with what they’ve got?
They don’t complain,
Their leaves aren’t wilting, it’s just winter,
It’s not like we can help with that.
They work for a living,
It’s their job to make us happy, and they’re lucky to have
A job at all,
How else would they pay for their fancy pots?
