Lone mothers

On call for a new arrival, they are relentless
sole protectors of the abandoned ones.

So many caught in the error of a moment
contemplate a future made for the soaps.

In the sterile rooms of their discontent
they bring a purified joy to this chaos.

I count the heartbreaks upon the abacus
watching the tears as they scream into the deep.

These poor girls, women of all ages
give birth in the frigid hallways of despair.

All alone their pain shakes the wall of the icy fortress
will they smile again before all hope is gone
