It’s not just enough
to be haunted by evil

we also have to replicate
it to where it becomes
banal

We all know what happens
if we deviate too much and
go into the forbidden woods

the monster with the human
skin mask and chainsaw
will scare us back to the
safety of a workstation
cubicle or a prescription
pill bottle

while the recently laid-
off slaughterhouse worker
with no more hope for
work that might maim
but still sustain him

dreams of revenge
or of an angel
to avenge him
