The day is a warehouse for night.
Packers of cloud clear shelves
for a starry background
to be hoisted and pinned on the sky.
We swap uniforms, watch a new crew
of animals take over. Our mistakes
are mopped up; the turgid liquid
rarely returning to rain, innocent snow.
