A Little Death

I was lying on a gurney
in the hospital, awaiting
my procedure.
Staring at the ceiling
consisting of
white metal gridwork
supporting off white
fiber tiles, perforated
with hundreds
of tiny dark holes.

In the center of the space
a recessed fluorescent fixture
casting sterile light throughout.
It occurred to me that for
a major portion of the population
ceilings like these are
the last thing they see
before they die.

In my opinion
seeing anything else
would be a vast improvement.
