The Eloquence of Dust

Amid a mix
of sloughed-off skin cells,
hair, clothing fibers
and bacteria,

amid animal fur,
bits of dead bugs,
soil particles
and pollen,

amid microscopic specks
of plastic,
garden minerals
and memories,

amid a witch’s brew
of organic pollutants
in an old house,
dusty clouds hold
a long memory,
a legacy entrenched
in carpets and crevices,

and from the walls
a thin ashen voice
dry as brittle insect wings
sings sad songs,
that break like eggshells
cracking and scattering
amid the glint
of silverfish feeding
on dust mites
feeding on mold,

breathing out
whispered words
of love and loss
and lament.
