Artificial Reveille

After artificial selection had completed the work of evolution,
Our species perfected artificial limbs & organs, hips, knee joints,
Eyes & teeth, and even an artificial sphincter!
In those days there were artificial flowers for artificial hearts.
Then came artificial flavorings & sweeteners in our food.
And there was artificial light on an artificial horizon.
In the fully furnished model home in the test-site at ground zero,
Artificial fruits & vegetables were stored in the refrigerator,
Artificial houseplants & an artificial Xmas tree decorated the living room.
In giant sports stadiums all over the world
All the tournaments & championship games were played on artificial turf.
Once temperatures began to soar & the ice-caps melted away
Artificial snow was blown over the mountain slopes
For the benefit of jet-set skiers.
An artificial coral reef had to be constructed
To replace the Great Barrier Reef that had turned white & died.
Artificial tears were shed at its passing
And all the wealthy dowagers who attended the funeral
Wore artificial diamonds & other artificial jewelry.
And after artificial intelligence began to replicate itself
Through various self-generating high-speed algorithms
Robot wars were waged by invisible drones.
No amount of artificial respiration
Or transfusion of artificial blood
Could revive the human species.
Not even artificial insemination & patented cell-lines
Could effectively return them to their former state of glory.
And so, artificial reveille was played at the outset of the new age
Where artificial gravity governed the movements
Of a hollowed-out, artificial moon.
