This familiar bum is peeing (or changing his pants)
behind the Turkish restaurant’s blue dumpster,

but the difference “does not signify much,”
as the correct Victorians might phrase it,

so pass without further notice since his daily
toilet is no concern of yours, and he has offended

no citizen though perhaps his machinations
are criminal despite his lack of nefarious intent.

In a minute he will be back on the avenue,
jeans zipped and riding at the thin waist,

out of your vision and your route that grows
more distant at a right angle to his usual endless

tramp from the traffic light to traffic light
sundered by a concrete mile crowded with cars,

where he will not expose himself to censure or arrest
as he exhibits his routine for the traveling throng to view.
