I’ll Always Have to Hire a Carpenter

Richard LeDue

Lost twenty pounds the first time
I fell in love,
believed in the sanctity of suffering
then (blame those Sunday School lessons
involving a macaroni project Jesus).

I’m old enough now to know
crucifixion a metaphor for existence,
but I’ve never been good with a hammer,
bent more nails than I should
admit. Now, I let wood rot,

worry more about stepping on broken glass
after dropping my favourite mug,
and how to best soak up the coffee,
ruining the mouldy crumbs under my fridge.
I found those twenty pounds

years later, among dusty books
and the silences
between bites of a ham sandwich,
while accepting death
is more of a foundation,

not a roof to fall from.
