Miranda in Nighttown

I had shoes when I left.
Cork soled wedgies with a twist
of leather at the toes. The bricks
in these alleys roughen my way.
There are tunnels and tunnels of mortar and
ancient sea-drunk stones, everything dripping,
nothing alight, a gash overhead where the sky pulses in.
Winds glitter and lash the heavy rain
into punishing switches. My cheeks sting
and my thin dress wells and sags like a storm-flogged sail.
There is no room for misgiving. A door cracks
a thin welcome. I am in before I have time
to see a face
or ask politely
for a name.
