Labor Day Poem

Erren Kelly

I write a poem in between washing dishes
my co-workers say they saw justin bieber
walking down santa monica boulevard
and i could care less
this is just a job
and I walk to work, down a street
lined with palm trees
i do it cos i need the money, not cos i like it

my boss snaps at me for no reason
but i know it’s just the cocaine talking
sometimes, she offers me a shot
of vodka or rum, but i pass
another break, and i look down
santa monica boulevard, like it’s
a boulevard of broken dreams
i write another poem on a
paper towel, and think of the people
sleeping on sixth street, and thank god
it wasn’t me

I wasn’t even upset, that i had to load
a freezer an hour before closing
but the final straw was not letting me
take off for my birthday, though i asked
two months in advance

when i gave her my notice, she mocked me
and said, “you’re no dishwasher!”

i said, “you’re right. I’m a writer....”
