you wanted me
to break myself of
who i am

simply so you could
be comfortable,

yet who said i wanted you
at my table?

i couldn’t measure up
to your impossible
and ever changing
standards,

and so i decided long ago
i would be myself;

never will i be society’s
damsel
because they are a fickle bunch
only wanting to cause more
harm than good with their
prehistoric views—

i am today and tomorrow’s daughter,
refusing the rhetoric of former moons;

it is time to shine with my own light—

because my magic, my power,
my beauty, and my voice
are worth celebrating;

even if they’d just bury me.
