Drowning Victim And The Next Steps

Detritus at all hours washed up on the shore.
A mummified stare – she really is dead.

What good’s the future if the present can be
so easily bagged, toted away on a stretcher.

My wife smiles like glitter on a river.
But no one drowns behind her teeth.

According to her touch, the dead woman
is fortunate to have lived at all.

Lying in bed, everything faces upward,
to the cracks in the ceiling, the fabric.

There’s a hush like before thunder.
Only this night, the thunder never comes.

The morning light is the amber of beginnings.
The yellow tape has been blown clear from the trees
