The Watercourse Way

David Sapp

I didn’t listen when,
a very long time ago,
Lao Tzu and Siddhartha
matter-of-factly, kindly
informed me that the chaos
of my mind is likely
the origin of my suffering,
my worry, my obsession
or rather my attempt
to harness it is my madness.

Eventually, painfully,
I discovered my mind
is not fabricated of levers
and gears, wires and switches.
It is a faulty analogy,
a dreadful misconception,
to view my head as an oily
machine or a set of circuits,

to assume there’s an orderly
schematic to apprehend,
to follow. My mind, my mind
is as nature, moves as water
(the sage’s Watercourse Way)
and acts accordingly, defying,
pushing at artificial edges.

Occasionally my mind
is routed by a pipe or sluice.
However, dams and levees fail.
To grab ahold of it is a futile,
illusive endeavor. So silly.
As anyone, from time to time
I am damp with a few tears
or drenched in a sudden storm.
