to the man
following me home
in his car last
night,
trying to figure out
where i lived after i told you
that i was fine thank you;
screw you—
because you’re the reason
every woman looks over her
shoulder when she crosses
the street,
and the reason that none of us
feel safe going to and from work;
you are the reason that
we dread leaving our houses
if we don’t have to—
just wish i could live in a world where
i felt safe,
where i didn’t have to constantly
be aware of what was going on
just in case something should happen,
a world where i didn’t have to
worry about strangers;
i hate that all the onus is put on
a woman to protect herself
instead of teaching men not to be creeps.
