History Repeated

Richard K. Williams

A book I read the other day
Black ink upon white page
The writer in prideful praise of
The greatness

The genius
The forward thinking
Of Genghis Kahn
His wonderful contributions
To the modern world

He allowed freedom of religion!
To those he did not slaughter

He indorsed free trade!
For those not used as human landfill
To pave the way
For his war machines to lay siege to a city

His uncanny ability
To bring different cultures together
Except those unarmed villages
Pillaged and burned to the ground
The men and children that were sold as slaves
Whose women, captured and ravished
Then traded, another commodity, livestock

His policies regarding the fair distribution of recovered plunder
Unless you did not swear allegiance to Kahn
Then death was your only reward

In conclusion
This writer described
A moving epilog
Standing at the spot
In Mongolia
On the windswept steppe where it all began
He and others
Bemoaning histories harsh treatment of their hero
Offered prayers
Burned some cedar
To sanctify
Declaring this place holy
A place of honor and respect

I wondered
If 700 years from now
Some writer historian
Will stand at the site
Of a beer hall
In Germany
To pray
To offer thanks
For Adolf Hitler’s contributions to society

Although knowing this world as I do
It’s most likely
Already
An annual event
