Reflections on Darth Vader

I’m not big on hero-worship
in general, but especially I
question the wisdom of letting
your son hop about wearing
that particular image so proudly
on his tee-shirt. You wouldn’t
allow him to do the same with
a picture of Hitler or Pol-Pot.
And yet this half-robot, half
wizard is famous as a murderer
and enslaver on a planetary
scale. A charitable interpretation
is that you allow this because the
character is fictional. If this is
the case, I want to draw your
attention to a phenomenon known
as “suspension of disbelief” and
ask why your offspring, in the
heat of suspended disbelief,
finds this individual so appealing
as a role model, and why, in the
coolness that follows, neither of
you find anything inappropriate
in continuing such an attachment?
