We’d not yet become brands
just people with untethered cameras
shooting footage only relatives
would see in e-picture frames
I use “we” collectively
though these were individual
decisions being made: go
shopping & save us from terror

There was no place to tell
how stupid this was unless
you were a newspaper
Veterans of the loudness war
happy wild & deaf

The name tags all read Mabel
perfectly poetic that way
& they’re rude to you on purpose
Then everybody laughs
at the insolent help

Regardless of percentages
we rounded up the tip & called it good
Didn’t care for the rich food
so here – learn a lesson in thrift
while we bomb back up
a mountain draped in flags

Every car looks presidential
& in a few years we’ll be living
in the White House of our Dodge

Proud for what we endured
that day in Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg
in October of 2001
