Objects in the Rearview Mirror...

Don Hargraves

Back when they had their house built
They put the whole house on a single floor
with plenty of open space in the living areas,
believing you were always “a broken bone away
from crutches, walkers or a wheelchair”
so everything better be on the same level.

They lived at the edge of the town –
a spot nearly suburb-like in its location –
and it stayed that way for many years,
but a couple of one-hundred-year floods
turned the town’s eyes towards higher ground
and made their house the new center of town.

Time has brought other issues to the fore –
a spacious house isn’t a help if the residents
can’t keep it clean or safely make it around
without the help of a walker or a wheelchair;
so now the question is not if, but when to move
somewhere closer to their kids, and to help.
