We were in a strip joint
In midtown Manhattan
Andy and I
Andy was teaching me
To drive big rigs but-
While we were waiting
Andy was teaching me
What kind of tits
Ass and beer he liked

Politely declining invitations
From a couple hookers
We sipped our beers
Exchanging opinions
On the finer points
Of each performer

When into this dive
Rushes a man
Shoving the hostess aside
Charges to a table
Where another patron
Rises in surprise
Then the first guy
Stabs the second guy
Right in the guts

Guy number two
Hits the floor
As the stabber
Scrambles out the door

The hostess recovers
And comes over
To the man on the floor
Holding his insides


Crouching down
She announces
“It’s OK
He just fell!”

Andy and I
Split that place
In a big hurry
But to this day
I’m amazed
At how calm
That hostess was
How cool and collected
In the eye of violence
What a talent!
How exactly do
You put that
On a resume?
