Modern Campground

On Saturday, starting early
the weekenders arrive.
Filling in the empty spaces
between the seasonal people.

Towing trailers, driving
motorhomes, or vehicles
crammed with camping gear.
All in the effort
to get back to nature.
Just not too far back
to get away from crowds
just not too far away.

After all, there are those sites
with water, sewer, and electric
for the RV and camper crowd.
Tent sites for the more adventurous
With WIFI, flush toilets, and hot showers
within a short walking distance.

A majority of the sites
encircle a vast open field
complete with recreational
equipment, swings, sandbox,
jungle gym, volleyball net, slide.
to eliminate children’s boredom
while their parents pretend
to return to frontier living.

As evening descends
around the field, campfires
spring up. Announcing
the various tribes, partaking of
their individual traditions.
Thankful for the five dollar
bundles of firewood
they purchased at the nearby
convenience store.
