Eye to Eye

Thomas M. McDade

Examining a stone so jacketed in moss
no name is visible, I consider probing
with my pocketknife but not allowed,
no rubbing or graffiti either a sign warns.
Something underfoot distracts me and
I bend to fetch a chestnut rind by a
thorn and the emerging nut is a mirror
and may lightning strike and shock all
memorials as shiny and I tell the same to
a hopping magpie and a passing grey cat
that doesn’t go around a spent vino quart,
just steps over and gives a hind paw kick
perhaps to hint that I’m on death’s shore
yet no eye to eye with the tinted glass
to seek a note to read, perhaps a pardon
