A New (Old) Prescription

Michael Ceraolo

I am probably the only anarchist
to have something public named after her
(Dr. Gertrude B. Kelly Playground
in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood,
near where I had a medical clinic
to treat those, especially children,
who couldn’t afford hospitals),
but that doesn’t change my views on the State

I don’t believe the State should be involved in education
(the following is about science specifically,
but the principle applies across the board):
“aid so given
is not and cannot be aid to science,
but to particular doctrines or dogmas,
and that,
where this aid is given,
it requires almost a revolution
to introduce a new idea”
and
“Woe to the nation that would strive
to increase knowledge or happiness
at the expense of justice
It will end by not having
morality,
or happiness,
knowledge”

I have strong opinions on ‘women’s rights’ ,
ones that no doubt have contributed
to my historical obscurity
because they don’t fit the narrative:
“there is, properly speaking,
no woman question, as apart from the question
of human right and human liberty”
“The woman’s cause is the man’s--they rise or sink
Together--- dwarfed or god-like---bond or free”

My philosophy gets a bad name
because some calling themselves anarchists
have used violent means
in the attempt to achieve desired ends;
they have fallen into the trap set for them:
“Oh my brothers!
let no blind feeling of revenge
against the state and its tools
lead you to play into its hands
by attempting to meet force with force”
“Remember that the employment of force
leads to the redevelopment
of the military spirit,
which
is totally opposed to the spirit
that must exist in the people before
anything that we wish for can be brought about”

There is an unholy alliance
between Capitalism and the State,
where
“all the laws have no other object
than to perpetrate injustice,
to support at any price
the monopolists in their plunder”
What can be done
about such a state of affairs?
First,
it is important to remember that
“You cannot shoot down or blow up
an economic system,
but
you can destroy it by ceasing to support it,
as soon as you understand where its evils lie”
And then,
keeping in mind the principles
of nonviolence and voluntaryism,
you can bring about the desired end
without using despicable means

You will have to figure out
the specifics for yourself
