God the Writer

Mark Pearce

A girl asked me to read a screenplay she had written. I like to encourage enthusiastic young talent, especially if it’s an attractive woman, so I agreed.
When she gave me the manuscript, she told me she was really excited. She said that God had given her the idea for the script, and that the writing had been amazingly easy, as if someone were guiding her thoughts and hands as she was writing. She said it must be God’s doing, since she had never written anything before and had expected it to be hard.
I suppose I should have felt flattered that she considered me qualified to critique God’s work. I read as much as I could. I won’t tell you what I thought of it because I don’t want to go to Hell.
Strangely enough, this is the second person who has given me something they’ve written, then told me it was God who really wrote it. A friend once gave me a tedious religious story to read. I had difficulty making it to the end, but being his friend, I praised it.
His tone became very smug. “Just HOW good do you think it is?”
I didn’t understand the tone or the question.
It turned out he felt that nothing so well written could be merely human. It must be of divine origin. He finally confessed it was really God who had written the story, using him as His instrument.
I began to wonder how many other people are out there, allowing themselves to be used as God’s quills? And why do they bring the manuscripts to me? Surely they don’t expect me to edit them.
Maybe they just want me for my contacts in the industry.
I guess the Bible was written so long ago that God doesn’t know anyone in the publishing business anymore.
