Empathy

Laina Ball

Despite the cheery reassuring smile
I wear as I gaze into her visitor expression -
a vulnerable blend of trusting expectation
and silent apprehension -
a renegade tear slips down my cheek

Somehow she catches it.
Her pale rheumy eyes lock on to mine,
concentrating, straining

From deep behind the fog of dementia
my mother’s voice emerges,
deep, rough, and shaky,

“Are .... you .... okay?”
