Dear, Other Woman,

Nancy Jo Allen

or should I say just another woman?
You think yourself a pearl,
for he needs you to feel that way.
Pearls are merely an irritant
like a parasite or a grain of sand
that makes its way inside a mollusk,
and are nothing more than nacre
easily destroyed by hard bumps,
or simple cleaning agents.
The thing about lustrous pearls
is they are best admired
when part of a string
(for there is safety in numbers)
not unlike a mobius strip—
one-sided, half-twisted,
flat, not oriented,
no beginning,
no end.

In truth,
pearls are not gems
to solidify a relationship
like colorless,
transparent diamonds.
The flawless ones
are highly valued.
