If I Could Remember

Nancy Jo Allen

if the eyes were hazel or brown
I’d know which daughter
bore witness to the hole in the door.

When it was closed,
only mine,
or their father’s,
saw the fist-shaped hole.
He left it damaged for years—
as a threat? a reminder?—
I do not know why.

But I do know one of the girls
asked me one day
why there was a hole
after using my computer
in the alcove of our bedroom.

I told the truth.
Now I wish I could remember
which one knows.
