Seahorse

Nancy Jo Allen

Female seahorses impregnate
male seahorses.
The male gestates eggs
he has fertilized within his body,
and expels two-thousand
live birthed babies
into the harsh life of sea water.
Predators abound,
and many do not survive.
While father is gestating,
mother is making more eggs
to begin the process again.
The adaptation to the environment
and hard truths ensures
these ancient creatures continue.

I indulge for a moment:
if men gestated and birthed
children into a hostile environment
from which there was no recourse
to protect them,
would they still wish
to ban abortion?
