didn’t always know my value

Linda M. Crate

change, change, change
they told me;
but not like that and not like this

always i have been too much,
but if you find me to be such then
go find less because i refuse to be
anyone less than me—

i am not going to apologize for being
different, i have always been told
that i am eccentric or weird;

and i used to be hurt by that but then
i realized that it was a compliment in

a society that would rather you mask
in an attempt to become like everyone else
but i am not everyone else i am me—

don’t care if that offends you because
i honestly don’t care if you like me,
know my magic and my worth;
and i won’t lose my voice again because
i didn’t always know my value—

but now that i do i will embrace every
mystery and paradox of me freely.
