Navrat the Brat

Supple and sinewy, Martine stood out in
any crowd. Her complexion, hair, muscle
tone were exquisite; at five-eight she was
taller than many women and some men.
An excellent athlete, she could have made
an Olympic team in any number of sports.
At tennis, her forte, no one could match her.
When she renounced her Czech citizenship
in favor of life as an American, life should
have been her oyster, with lucrative
endorsement deals aplenty and with her
a spokesperson for any number of causes.
But, Martina dared love a woman and she
found none of those possibilities open to her.
For this was 1976 and LGBTQ didn't yet exist.
