The weekend in Jersey
Three days of restaurants and bars
Bars like Dingo’s
My son’s hangout
It appears like a cross between
The Adam’s Family house and
The inside of Ozzy Osbourn’s head
But the patrons are relaxed
They are drinking
They are young
I am with my son Keith
I am with Tina my most normal friend
They are drinking
They are young
I observe the customers
Recognizing our differences
I see the uniforms they wear
The way they express their individuality
By dressing exactly alike
I am impressed by the women’s fashion sense
They dress to go out
Jeans and heels
Torn tee shirts and coach bags
In contrast
My son’s tribe
His troops
In band emblazoned black tee shirts
Shorts and sneakers
They are all on familiar turf
Even my most normal friend from home
Quickly blends in
I stand out
Odd man out
Old man out
Still
We’re having fun
Shooting pool
All the cheap shots are not on the table
Keith and I steal cigarettes from Tina
She’s certain now she owns us both
We talk trash
I drink
But I’m not young
I’m accepted
We hang out
We laugh
We drink
Until we go pirate eye and hula hoop
My son’s girlfriend suddenly appears at the door
This is when my son makes another of life’s tragic discoveries
No matter how earnestly you say it
Go Go Gadget Sober
Will not deliver the anticipated result
