When he was a boy,
there were doubts
that he even existed.

For his father and he
never went fishing,
or tossed a football back and forth,
or knocked heads
down in the depths of a Buick engine.

Not even his good grades
or supple swimming stroke
did the vision of those around him
any favors.

From time to time,
he pleaded for ballet lessons.

His voice was high and shrill,
and no one knew where
the sound was coming from.
