Normal From the Neck Down

The lean-ribbed man stepped into the crowd,
his chalky white arms setting him apart from
his sun-bronzed fellow travellers, who were
presently loitering in the bus terminal.

As he proceeded through, others regarded
him first with a blink of surprise, then with
reddened cheeks, averting their gaze hurriedly.
He handed out a small yellow card to each
person that he observed staring at him. The
card said:

I suffer from Treacher-Collins Syndrome, an
inheritable disease caused by abnormalities in
the 5th gene. There is no prevention and there
is no cure.

As the man walked away, the observers noticed
the back of his white tee shirt, which read:
Why Wouldn’t They Let My Mother Terminate
Her Pregnancy?
