Bumper Sticker Philosophies

Robert Royal Poff

I could print out all my life’s beliefs
gift them a fancy font, vividly colored
and portrayed through an image
slap my bumper sticker philosophies to a car
and give drivers insight to my life as they go by
I could speak on page with full devotion to the written word
allow people to graze its face value as they skim shelves of others teachings
all the same, leather bound or cheaply crafted, all the same
I could paint a dozen works of art
each with more immaculately spoken truths than the last
but all it amounts to is one bumper sticker philosophy after the next
one discount Democritus preach after another
all of it only amounting to a quote worthy of a few inches on the rear of a car
my words crave more
they excel in greed and refuse to be stuck as one of the others
an old book whose pages are caked shut with dirt
a bumper sticker partly washed away from years of wear and tear
no my words crave greatness
yearn achievement
and lust power
a bumper sticker philosophy too dangerous for wear for fear of distracted crashes
