She, the palimpsest

Fabrice Poussin

It is a holiday of sorts, a birthday, Valentine’s day
in the midst of a scorching August
opening the secrets wrapped in mystery
a frenzied moment filled with hopes.

A chest revealed, safe with the unbreakable locks
another challenge to the trembling heart
of the adventurer in the quest for treasure
picturing previous stones within these walls.

Finding a box of black armor safe inside
he dares not reach to the traitorous hinges
fearing one more trick of the ignoble jokester
eyes closed, soul tense as steel his fingers plunge.

Ruby walls of soft velvet comfort the weary touch
with a deep breath he accepts vulnerability
for the hour as he may discover still the unknown
hidden by the illusory tenderness of a wish.

A concrete image comes to shape to the exhausted mind
like the promise of a life cradled in a case made for eternity
diminutive it prolongs the nightmarish dream
into yet another world, cold as ice on satin a stone lies.

Like the idol he sought, holding onto the light
blinded, he stares to the depth of the glassy rock
only to find behind the unbreakable skin another
unattainable present to the next holiday tomorrow perhaps.
