I’m Not John Clark

Mark Pearce

One afternoon, as I was walking through a parking lot, I heard someone shout my name. I looked around and some lady was running across the asphalt in my direction. When she reached me, she threw her arms around my neck. I didn’t recognize her, but she knew my name, and I’ve never turned down a hug in my life. So I just went with it.
After a minute, she leaned back and looked at me and said, “You don’t remember me, do you?” While I was trying to think of where I might know her from, she said, “We went on a cruise together.” Now I’ve never been on a cruise in my life. She saw the doubt in my eyes and said, “Aren’t you John Clark?”
While I could see the immediate advantages to being John Clark, I wasn’t sure how long I could sustain it. Obviously, the name she had shouted had not been Mark. As I stood there, trying to think of a pithy reply, she said, “Aren’t you a priest?”
Under the circumstances, I saw no advantages to pretending to be a priest. So I told her no, my name is not John Clark, I’ve never been on a cruise, and I’m not a priest.
In the ensuing commotion, I forgot to ask for her phone number.
