The Metal Box

Mark Pearce

When I was in High School, a group of my friends and I discovered a metal box submerged at the bottom of a creek deep in the woods. The box was partially buried in the mud near the center of the water. We tried to dig it out, but couldn’t get it loose. We decided to try damming up the creek to give us better access. We spent the better part of an afternoon dragging logs across a narrow portion of the creek, then jamming rocks against the logs, but we couldn’t stop the flow. We finally decided to go home and come back the next day with digging implements.
When we returned the next day, we discovered that the creek had finished the job we had started. Dirt, twigs, and other debris had filled the gaps in our dam, creating enough of a seal to redirect the creek away from the object of our endeavors.
We squished across the mud to the metal box that we could now see jutting up into the air. It was immediately obvious why we had been unable to dig it out. What emerged from the mud was the metal corner of a filing cabinet. We all had a good laugh and left well satisfied. We had found no treasure, but it had been an interesting little adventure.
It never occurred to us at the time, but there was probably some farmer down the way who wondered why his crops dried up from a lack of water, and some homeowner who awakened to find his house flooded because a creek had been redirected through his living room.
