Sometimes when I wake

David Dumouriez

Maybe this is common – perhaps you’ve
felt it too – but sometimes when I wake,
I’m quite detached from where I am [just
‘where’, that is, not ‘who’]. The position
of the windows, their relation to the walls,
curtain type and colour – all these I survey
to localise me in a past or present, land of
origin or of convenience. More quickly
than it seems, I’m sure, the proper bearings
reassert themselves, this curious uncertainty
then lost and usually forgot. (Till now, at least.)
This happens, as I tell you, sometimes.
But always – if you’ll permit me to go on –
always when I wake, I don’t know where
I’d like to be. Indeed, if such a place exists.
Now is that common? Did you feel it too?
