When I am dead,
no bells would be allowed to toll my end,
no candles would flicker over a prayer book,
no yellow would wreathe a dirge with daffodils,
no words in print.

When I am dead,
no monument would mark my deep-dug bed,
no grief-stricken angel
with spread-out wings,
no murmuring lips.

When I am dead,
no progeny would commemorate a single date
that resurrects my memory
or a single deed
for my history would be discreetly effaced.
