In the cornfield-surrounded
town of Lincoln Nebraska with
a sign at one end telling motorists
how “Jesus Saves”
—you repainted it to read:
“Save Jesus.”

Skipping classes to stand atop
a stolen dorm lounge chair
to megaphone passing students
with the question: “Do you know
the meaning of your existence?
For a dollar ninety-nine I’ll
tell you.”

Never working more than a month
at any job because as you told
me after you failed what would
become your final semester:
“I plan on becoming an angel.”

Twenty years later when you leapt
into an America from which
you could never bounce back:

More and more of us
stand armed and ready
and Jesus still needs saving
