Ode #4 To A Dadaist Who Died Too Soon

Kenneth DiMaggio

At a university where
being an Alpha meant
getting girls with hair
teased out like cotton
candy

We did a lot of reading
talked a lot about life
having no meaning
listened to music that
was depressing
(we still couldn’t
to get laid)

except for you who had
that aura which every
mother warned their
daughter not to sleep
with or at least never
marry

If it seemed like I would
spend the rest of my life
listening to Sisters of Mercy
or Joy Division
I eventually became that
professor listening to Jazz
or recordings of musicals
like Hamilton

Dada was only supposed
to be temporary (and poems
don’t commit suicide)

Even if we slowly withdraw
them from the leaps that
we the comfortably living

are now afraid to make
