It’s a lot harder to go into
a building eight hours a day
five days a week twenty or
thirty something years
(Isn’t it?)

Skipping philosophy class
to stand on the busiest corner
of this football-loving and
God-fearing Midwestern town
to hold up a large crucifix you
found and announce how
Jesus was for sale
(Well, isn’t he?)

If you had worked long
enough in the building
like the one you leaped
from
—you would discover
how even anarchy
is for sale

But you can’t buy
suicide (Is that what
you were trying
to tell us?)

Oh crazy poet who took
his life too soon

If you had just continued
meaninglessly writing
memos and riding
elevators you would
discover that there is
a reasonable compromise
as I eventually did
(Didn’t I?)
