If you had just listened
to the wrong bands or
met a band of freaks lost
somewhere between
Black Sabbath and Black Flag
you might have befriended
a skateboard instead of a gun

Eyeglasses askew on a nose
the size of a small hatchet
Red plaid shirt tucked into
blue plaid pants belted
with a 5-inch-wide white belt
Walk that was more like
a waddle and laugh that
sounded like a bat getting
castrated (me who was
more misfitted than
you back in high school)

But by college a vampire
in sunglasses and leather
& black that the world
no longer dared to sneak
behind to pull my pants up
to my virgin privates

If not Ozzy Osbourne or Henry
Rollins maybe William Burroughs
or even Emily Dickinson
finding like-minded company
among similar nobodies praising
you for a crazy poem or song
about the taunting and bullying
we all would escape from
and blossom
