To help you acclimate
your mother gave you
her semi-automatic rifle

Maturity responsibility
and community
in the maintenance and
respect of a weapon

With my father a cop
I could have had one
but I only wanted
an electric guitar
and to write lyrics
worse than my playing
which led me to the freaks
& failures spray-painting
their presence between
the high school prom and
the sorority or fraternity
pledge week

Was there no underground
for you Adam?
No immature but self-defining
rebellion?

As a professor and member
of an institution
I will continue trying to guide
without acclimatizing young
raw and hungry expression

And so long as I am privileged
to go on teaching I will refuse
to be normal

I will refuse
to own a gun
