a woman who lived in
your suburban neighbor-
hood was interviewed
and cried about how
“Things like this are not
supposed to happen
here!”

And when I went to teach
in the city of Hartford
the next day and heard
a gunshot nearby my
classroom

I paused the lesson
as my mostly female
students took out
their cellphones to
check on their children
and after a few moments

return to a classroom that
we would all try to catch
up in before the next
interruption
