midnight comes
with acid flowers and
wilted rain when,
through its hands,
the wind stops.
when fog that twitches
and groans and governs
the prairie
is a boneless muscle,
my steps are more than autobiography,
my fingers more than clothespinned history.
smoke
as always, and
a train, is a most dramatic thing.
if only it didn’t carve as deep as it does,
if only it weren’t a plague pandemic with touch,
if only it wouldn’t resemble itself
but softly whistle behind the wind.
