Clammy-palmed, all twitchiness and palpitations,
heart racing hell for leather
like a banged-up stock car around a dust-shrouded dirt track,

short of breath, tingling everywhere, grinding his molars,
he walked into the unknown room, chest aflutter, mind aflame,
found it too crowded, too buzzing, too noisy,

too filled with probing and judgmental eyes,
and walked back out like a man on fire, a fully engulfed self-immolator,
healing slower than a flame-scarred mass of gnarled tissue no balm could soothe..
