Three bloody noses
on a cold, dry February morning
tell us everything we need
about each other,
as long distance phone calls
from extended family
remind us how humidifiers
go on clearance sales in the spring
sometimes- our silent acceptance
of red sniffles, crimson sneezes,
louder than any “I love you,”
because none of us fear our shared blood,
and even after the fresh snow from last night
piled up old lies about clean beginnings
and endings, we know better.
